Bookmarking frequently used websites is second nature to many people. I end up bookmarking so much that I often forget which bookmarks I already have. Are there ways to improve on the standard browser bookmarking process? In this digital age, absolutely! There are some websites that I do prefer to traditionally bookmark. These are the sites that I typically visit every time I go online. Now that I have been exploring the topic of bookmarking, I am realizing there are numerous other bookmarking resources on the World Wide Web that can be utilized to a greater potential than traditional browser bookmarking.
Social bookmarking is not something that I had thought much about until recently. I did not even realize that by using Twitter, I was already socially bookmarking websites and resources. Social bookmarking includes saving bookmarks to a public website and using the public website to tag, share, edit, organize, store and/or manage the bookmarks. This can valuable to educators because there is great potential for sharing educational resources and ideas.
There are numerous social bookmarking websites, but which are the most beneficial for educators to use? I am going to highlight some of the top social bookmarking websites.
Delicious
http://www.delicious.com/
Delicious is one of the more well-known social bookmarking websites. You just add the Delicious “bookmarklet” to your browser bookmark toolbar and you can easily send links to your account in Delicious. From your account, you can store bookmarks, share them with others by tagging, edit, annotate and even browse for relevant bookmarks posted by others. Check out this blog to read more about how Delicious can be used by educators: http://blog.delicious.com/
Diigo
http://www.diigo.com
Diigo is set up very similar to Delicious. You can download the “diigolet”, their version of the “bookmarklet” for your browser toolbar to highlight, bookmark the link to your Diigo account, post sticky notes on the bookmarked site or share your bookmark through social networking sites or email. You can join groups to share bookmarks according to subject.

Pinterest
http://pinterest.com/
I find this website to be addictive. People use Pinterest to browse or search for many different topics or tags. While Pinterest is not typically used for education and the links are not usually academic or research based, there are some education tips and resources that are “pinned” on the website. I have personally found ideas for my classroom there. Just keep in mind that you are not going to be able to view much scholarship.
StumbleUpon

This is one of the more interesting websites I have explored recently. You input your interests and the website searches web content for you. Check out their introductory video below:
